A descendant of my book's main character came to visit in late October. Pete is a direct descendant of William Gregory from "A Scottish Migration to Alexandria." This was Pete's second visit for me, but not his first to Alexandria. He has been coming to this city all his life. Pete's family would visit his Uncle and relatives with names like Leadbeater and Snowden. These old Alexandria names are on our Leadbeater Apothecary Shop, and Alexandria's first newspaper publisher. Pete brought with him a trove of family letters by William and his relatives.
Pete and I visited Alexandria's merchant ship on the waterfront, and the archaeology museum in the Torpedo Factory, where this whole project started for me. We had dinner along with my husband at Sonoma Cellar at 207 King Street. That is the building where William Gregory lived in the early 1800s with his young wife and her family, before he built his own houses.
Below is another photo of Pete's visit, and William Gregory's signed Civil War oath - the actual document! - which I found at the library. William signed the Government's Oath even though he was a Southern sympathizer, so his family could stay in their home on North Washington Street in Alexandria. These photos can be seen larger on my Patreon page. There, I will post my film "Scottish Migration to Alexandria" soon. I will be releasing the first half of the documentary that I spent years working on. By visiting my Patreon page, you can see my latest posts, and sign up for a free membership. That will get you the email alert when I release the film early this coming year. Here is the link:
