Screen Printing Bags!

Posted by Ellen Hamilton on

New respect for commercial screen printers! Today I screen printed Yellow Dot shopping bags for the customers. My small bags are all a complete disaster! Every one is flawed. At first I was annoyed, but then I started seeing each one as uniquely special. So I plan on using them all, now matter how gnarly. Then I moved on to the larger brown bags, and every one was just about perfect! A thing of beauty. Some day if I can secure an indoor retail space, maybe I'll make some kind of wall art out of the flawed bags.

Cicadas and Father's Day

Father's Day is this Sunday, June 20th. The animation above started out as a watercolor painting. I scanned my painting, cut out the fish, and added the animation. I also have it as a printed card.   I like to carry books at Yellow Dot Shop, both for grown-ups and kids. Carrying a book store back and forth is not the first thing one would think of as the thing to do! However, I get a great response from people, especially the kids. I have my favorite books that I read when I was young. Lately I bring just a...

West End and Old Town North Markets

Posted by Ellen Hamilton on

Yellow Dot Shop has been on the move! I am a new vendor at Alexandria's West End Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings. This Market is in Brenman Park in the Carlyle neighborhood off of Duke Street. A small creek is nearby and you can hear the birds sing. Lots of families, kids, dogs and seniors come by and it is very lively!   This Thursday afternoon in May was my first time at Alexandria's Old Town North Market. From 3pm to 7pm, this market is on the corner of North Royal and Montgomery streets, in a parking lot next to...

Easter cards, birthday cards, anniversary cards and Alexandria greeting cards all have photography, art and design done here at Yellow Dot Shop. I am hand printing sheets of wrapping paper for various holidays. My purses are sewn with my own printed fabric. Indoor Store? My hope is to find an affordable indoor retail space, now that Covid is hopefully coming to an end. I am thrilled to display my cards, books and items in an outdoor tent, but it is challenging. An indoor space will allow me to hang framed prints and art, and have all my books out at once....

Printed by Hand for St. Patrick's Day

Posted by Ellen Hamilton on

For March my focus is switching to St. Patrick's Day. I carved a shamrock shaped printing block for several projects. I hand-mixed green inks and with gold printer's ink I have been working on wrapping paper in my basement workspace. Each sheet of wrapping paper is unique with decorative elements printed with bottle tops, mardi gras beads and anything I can find. The other day I bought my first load of t-shirts in bulk. I didn't think the shirts would arrive on time for printing, heat treating, photographing and uploading to the website, so I bought additional single gray and...
